Link Experiment

One of the things I use this blog for, aside from informing anyone who reads about the tribulations of running an online business, is to help get new pages and products indexed, or reindexed quickly. Last night, at about midnight, I wrote a post that talked about the new Kids Foam Chairs I added to our new site and put a link to that page. Within 12 hours, that new page was indexed by Google and was listed in the top 10 pages for each of the 3 keywords I had targeted for that category page.
Now GoogleBot (and other search engine crawlers) will begin the process of following all the links on that page and index everything as it crawls through our site. Once we start getting credit for all of the links that I’m exchanging, hopefully we can start pulling in free optimized traffic from Google and all the other search engines. So, since I still have a few pages that either haven’t been updated or haven’t been reindexed since I actually added real content to the site, I would like to try an experiment and see if I can have that happen by placing links on this blog to each of the pages on www.my-bean-bag-place.com that need to be added to the index.
I’ll post in a day or two if all of these pages have updated indexes based on Google indexing this post and following the links to get all this stuff updated. I also want to see the difference between indexing a new page for the first time as opposed to updating a page that is already in the index. Some of these pages haven’t been indexed yet and some have been. But I’d like to see all of them updated because they have all had content and optimization added to them since I published my Yahoo Store for the first time.
Irritating

Something happened the other day that really irritated me. One of my link partners emailed me to ask me to remove their link from my site. People usually don’t mind having links. A link to your site can’t hurt you. It the sites you link to that can penalize you with the search engines. I’m not sure why someone would make this request. Maybe he figured my site was banned or something because of my recent pagerank loss…I removed the link but didn’t email the idiot back to let him know that I took it down…he’s emailed me again asking to have it taken down, but I just deleted the email. Its already down, if you checked it yourself you would see that, dumbass! On top of that, if it is my pagerank decline that caused this issue, it is ridiculous. I am sure that this is a temporary glitch and once Google updates its index again, I’ll get me rank back…again, all my keyword positions have not only remained, but some have gotten better since the PR of 0…
Anyway, I digress…I’ve watched, in Yahoo, my floor pillow page float between the 1st and 4th position on the page. We’re still getting a good amount of traffic. Our sales have trailed off a bit, but we’re still getting more than I expected based on the fact that our shipping deadlines are well past. I will be spending some time next week working on the website and improving things. Optimizing for the engines, maybe writing some articles and other things like that. I also might consider redesigning our homepage for 2008…That would be fun. On a final note on my keywords. In Yahoo, my bean bags page has almost fallen off the map….at one point, My Pillow Place was the 13th listings…now we’re several pages back…what’s up with that?
As I Suspected…

October is starting out as last October did…few sales. I still think this is the calm before the storm. Holiday buying will be ramping up in November. We hope it makes up for a potentially bad October. I am hoping I have to increase the limit our credit card processor allows us to charge before the end of the year.
On to the site…we just posted our new Body Pillow a few days ago and got a sale for it today. This is great because this page isn’t even indexed yet….that is why I love splash pages. You can add new products to the site, and as long as they fit in an existing category, people will be able to find it and buy. Sadly, I’ve seen our bean bag listing fall a few places in Yahoo. We’re still on the 2nd page, but I was hoping for a move in the other direction.
Its been almost 7 months since we added a kid furniture section to our site. Based on the fact that this is a very competitive niche, I didn’t expect to be listed high for this keyword. It takes time, links and luck. Though, someone found us today looking for children’s floor pillows.
It amazes me that if you are not constantly working on your site, and doing little tweaks for optimization, you will fall. As other webmasters are constantly adding content, links and products to their sites, its a big game to get the top listing. Today I saw something that amazed me. The site listed right after me for Bean Bags (listed highly at number 20) is under construction, has no content, no links and has a page rank of 4. What is that?!
