Severe Slowdown

Over the last 4 days we’ve seen a severe drop in Sales…and a mild drop in visitors. It gets frustrating when, for seemingly no reason, everything just stops. When you’re a business and just trying to turn a profit, days like this can be mind-numbing. What’s worse is when it perpetuates itself for a few days…
We’ve used this time to get www.my-pillow-place.com caught up with the behind the scenes stuff that encompasses any business, such as invoicing and filing. The boring stuff, as I like to call it.
I’ve failed to add a new product this week, but today being Thursday, I plan on having a new product on the site before Sunday night…maybe 2 if I work quickly. I also really need to spend time optimizing for our dog bed line and our bean bag line…I’ve come up with some new methonds on how to improve our listings for these two niches which seem to have trouble getting listed high. The competition is tough, but always try to improve.
Back to School

Its back to school time, so like we did a year ago, we’ve started to push the back to college, decorate your dorm room stuff to those who need it. We’ll be running a week long adwords campaign to target customers who need dorm room furnishings. On top of that, we’ll be offering a few products at a lower price point for a short time. I’ve also finally upated the fabrics on our Classic Bean Bag and Dorm Bean Bag items. We’ve also taken a few dollars off of our Big Joe Bean Bag Floor Pillow because we’ve noticed that there have been a lot of searches specifically for the Big Joe, however sales have been lower than hoped of that quality product.
I’ve noticed that gas prices have started to drop and I hope that helps the economy because we would like to see some growth in ours and other business as we make the push into the 4th quarter of the year. It would be nice to have a good sales holiday. My goal of adding a new product every week has slowed because it is a big commitment to work. On top of that, I want to make sure that the products we add are good quality products that we would want to use ourselves. So, if its a little less than one a week, then that is fine. But I would like to have many more products added before the end of 2008.
New Techniques

I’ve stated in earlier posts how I’ve been having a serious problem with my Bean Bags splash page. I think the problem with the original page is something undefinable. So instead of doing something like redoing the page, I’ve decided to create a whole new page to take the place of the problem page. I’m hoping the new page can help me get more exposure for bean bags. I’ve used an old page that was indexed already, and replaced it with an all new bean bags splash page. New text and descriptions, header tags and titles should distinguish the page as unique. I’ll have to get some incoming links to it in order to see if I can get it indexed quickly.
New Bean Bags

A critical product line to the success of My Pillow Place is our Bean Bags. At one point, we had our product splash page on the 3rd page of Google and we were climbing. That was great and I thought that we would be on the first page in no time as long as I kept getting links and optimizing those pages. Well, for some reason, that page has dropped so far on the list of organic searches that I need to do something drastic to get that page back in the fold. I mean, the web pages that are coming in the search results ahead of me, at some point, are completely irrelevant to the search…web pages for bean bag toss games are showing up ahead of me….ridiculous.
So, I went ahead and redesigned our bean bags page. I’ve added some products and and redirected focus on some of our other products. I think this will help get some more exposure to a lot of our products that just never get seen. We’re also looking to add more products to our dog beds line because that is a tough market to crack and we need a more robust product selection.
May has started out like gang busters in terms of sales…but all of a sudden, over the last few days, things have slowed tremendously. Can’t figure out why.
New Products and Google

We’ve been getting many many searches over the last few months for memory foam bean bags. So last night I finally added a great new product to our site. It fits nicely into our soft foam furniture splash page and fills peoples need for the memory foam bean bag. I’ve also moved some products around on that page to give prominence to the new, and highly sought after product. Our supplier tells us that its a top seller, so I am hoping that we can market it properly and help people find it.
I’ve also had a strange occurence with Google. For some reason our Bean Bag Furniture splash page has fallen off the Google landscape. I can’t explain it. Have I done something wrong? Google hasn’t penalized my site because we’re still getting a majority of our traffic from them. But is that page out of favor? Do I have duplicate content? I’ve rewritten the text and added some links to see if I can’t bring back the Bean bag pages.
