New Techniques

I’ve stated in earlier posts how I’ve been having a serious problem with my Bean Bags splash page. I think the problem with the original page is something undefinable. So instead of doing something like redoing the page, I’ve decided to create a whole new page to take the place of the problem page. I’m hoping the new page can help me get more exposure for bean bags. I’ve used an old page that was indexed already, and replaced it with an all new bean bags splash page. New text and descriptions, header tags and titles should distinguish the page as unique. I’ll have to get some incoming links to it in order to see if I can get it indexed quickly.
The Push for new Products

I’m really motivated to get some new products up on our site. The nice thing is that many of our drop shippers are in a transitions where there R & D departments are coming up with new products. So I don’t have to go out and find new companies and I already have an account set up. Last night we added a new Bedrest or Read in Bed Pillow product. What’s unique about this item is that its an arm pillow filled with a cushy shredded foam. Like many of our other floor pillows and bean bags, the foam filled items do pretty well and they’re quality products that last a long time. I personally love the shredded foam products because they are comfortable. My only criticism of them is that sometimes they can look chunky instead of smooth…but the bigger issue is comfort and they work well in that regard.
I’m also trying to bring more credibility to our dog bed line. So in addition to adding more dog beds this week and next, I created a dog bed information lens on Squidoo. I hope it helps get more traffic to our site for dog bed seekers. We are up against so much competition in that area that we need to find alternative ways to have people find us.
New Bean Bags

A critical product line to the success of My Pillow Place is our Bean Bags. At one point, we had our product splash page on the 3rd page of Google and we were climbing. That was great and I thought that we would be on the first page in no time as long as I kept getting links and optimizing those pages. Well, for some reason, that page has dropped so far on the list of organic searches that I need to do something drastic to get that page back in the fold. I mean, the web pages that are coming in the search results ahead of me, at some point, are completely irrelevant to the search…web pages for bean bag toss games are showing up ahead of me….ridiculous.
So, I went ahead and redesigned our bean bags page. I’ve added some products and and redirected focus on some of our other products. I think this will help get some more exposure to a lot of our products that just never get seen. We’re also looking to add more products to our dog beds line because that is a tough market to crack and we need a more robust product selection.
May has started out like gang busters in terms of sales…but all of a sudden, over the last few days, things have slowed tremendously. Can’t figure out why.
Rebate Checks
May 12, 2008 at 11:51 pm | In online retailing | Leave a CommentMy friends have started to receive their government rebate checks. I still await mine. As an online retailer with the goal of making money, we hope that there’s some people out there that decide to spend their new found money with us. I see many commercials on TV that have large stores giving bonuses if you spend your check with them. Even though I don’t believe enough people will spend their checks right away to make a difference in the economy I intend to spend mine.
We had a good amount of sales over the weekend. I didn’t expect much because it was mother’s day. But may overall has started strong. I always get excited when we sell new products for the first time. Over the weekend we made our first sale of our newly added round children’s floor pillows …putting them on sale may have helped our customer decide to buy. I did this after seeing that these pillows had a decent amount of people looking at the page, but no one had bought. We put them on sale, and viola…a sale.
Cinco De Mayo
May 5, 2008 at 11:53 pm | In online retailing | Leave a CommentAfter the first 5 days of May 2008, I am pretty pleased with how things have started out this month. There are still some inconsistencies with sales and traffic that have held over from April. April ended up being good, however it was a strong finish towards the end of the month that allowed us to reach our goals.
I’ve noticed that a Page Rank update has appeared in the last few weeks. Although My Pillow Place hasn’t seen a change, this Blog has climbed to a 4 which is significant. Just a few months ago, we were at 0. Over the weekend, I added a new L-Shaped body pillow to our line. This is a product that I had suggested to one of our existing suppliers that it would be a good idea to offer and they agreed and gave us a SKU for the item. So, I hope it does well. And right now, I don’t think anyone has this product except us. Its called the LuniPillow and it compliments its counterpart, the U-Shaped Unipillow.
The struggle continues with our Bean Bags. I’m so disappointed that we can’t get any traction in Google for these product pages. I’m going to need to come up with a new strategy to optimize. I keep seeing all of the irrelevant pages listed in Google for Bean Bags and that just doesn’t seem fair. The fight will continue. And we continue to do well with our Floor Pillows in getting a little traffic to our site.
We’ve been pretty consistent over the first four months of this year. But traffic has hit a plateau. I’d like to really see us take the next step in improving our business. I’d like to see 300-400 visitors per day before the summer ends.
